Major groups (examples)
- Passerines (songbirds/perching birds): Over half of all bird species — robins, sparrows, crows, etc.
- Waterfowl: Ducks, geese, swans.
- Raptors: Eagles, hawks, owls.
- Flightless: Ostriches, emus, penguins, cassowaries.
- Others: Parrots, hummingbirds, seabirds (albatrosses, puffins), etc.
Birds live on every continent, including Antarctica (penguins), and range from the tiny bee hummingbird (~2 grams) to the ostrich (up to 150+ kg).
Key characteristics that define birds:
- Feathers: Unique to birds among living animals (though some non-avian dinosaurs also had them). Used for flight, insulation, display, and waterproofing.
- Beaks (toothless jaws): Covered in keratin, highly specialized for different diets.
- Wings: Modified forelimbs. While not all birds fly (e.g., ostriches, penguins, kiwis), all have the basic wing structure.
- Hollow bones with air sacs: Makes them lightweight for flight while remaining strong.
- High metabolism & endothermy: They maintain high body temperatures and have a four-chambered heart.
- Hard-shelled eggs: Laid with a calcium carbonate shell.
- Excellent vision and often complex vocalizations (songs/calls).
